When Should I See a Doctor for Erectile Dysfunction?

Many men have experienced a problem getting or keeping an erection at some point in their lives.  These occasional issues can be caused by fatigue, stress, or any number of other issues.  But when the problem becomes more frequent and longer lasting, it is often a sign of a bigger issue.  In this case, consultation with a doctor often becomes necessary.

Many men find it difficult to speak with their doctor about erectile dysfunction, or ED.  They may be uncomfortable discussing the details, or ashamed they are experiencing ED.  But speaking with a doctor is important for a few major reasons.  The first is that erectile dysfunction can put an unnecessary strain on your life.  It can cause strain with your partner, and can also create self doubt.  The second reason is that ED is treatable.  By creating an open line of communication with your doctor, you can often solve the problem of ED.  Finally, ED can be related to many other serious health conditions, and by speaking to your doctor about ED, you may save yourself from health complications in the long run.  For example, ED can be related to high blood pressure or diabetes.

So, how do you get the courage to talk to your doctor about erectile dysfunction?  First, recognize that you are not alone – more than half of men between the ages of 40 and 70 have reported having some degree of erectile difficulties.  Next, try to gain confidence in talking about it.  You may want to introduce the subject in a round about way – for example, saying that you have a sexual health concern, instead of immediately jumping to erectile dysfunction.  By easing into the subject, you may feel more confident sharing your problems.  Once the topic has been breached, be as honest as possible with your doctor – the more information they have, the easier it will be for them to correctly diagnose the issue and get you started with the proper form of treatment.
