ED Treatment: Should You Use Medication?

After you have decided that you are experiencing a problem getting or maintaining an erection, the next step is, of course, to see a doctor. Even though this subject is sometimes difficult or embarrassing to talk about, your doctor can work with you to find the best solution for you.

One of those solutions could be taking medication such as Cialis, Levitra or Viagra. Medication such as this is often the first option provided because of its ease of use, and for most men they are effective. However, this option isn’t for everyone. For about 30% of men, these ED medications might not be effective. These medications are also not an option for patients with heart disease of those who need to take nitroglycerin or other medicines that contain nitrates.

Other Options

Medication is not the right path for everyone and sometimes isn’t necessary to see a difference in your erection problems. Making lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking or drinking less alcohol can potentially offer a solution. Also, talking with your partner about these issues or doing sensual exercises with them can help elevate nerves or fears you may be experiencing as a result of the difficulties you’re having.

If you and your doctor find that ED medication is not the right solution for you, there are many other treatments available through an urologist. These could include a vacuum erection device (also known as a penis pump), penile injection therapy, or an inflatable penile implant.
When searching for an ED treatment, it is best to start with simple and easy solutions and continue to work with your doctor to find something that works for you.
